Equipment repairs

Repaired here,
back to you quickly

Radio equipment gets repaired in our own workshop, by our own technicians. Nothing is shipped offshore and nothing waits in a queue at a third party. Companies right across New Zealand send equipment to us and get it back working.

Why repair

Replacing a fleet is the expensive answer

Being able to service communications equipment — and having a team that can — is the difference between replacing expensive equipment and getting a long life out of it.

A radio that will not transmit is not usually a dead radio. It is a worn antenna connector, a failed PTT switch, a battery at the end of its life, water where water should not be, or a board-level fault that a technician with the right gear can find in an afternoon. Replacement is what you do when nobody can tell you which of those it is.

We are not trying to sell you a new fleet. If the repair is not worth doing we will say so, and we will tell you why — but most of the time equipment written off as finished has years left in it.

  • Repaired in house. Our own workshop and our own technicians. It does not get forwarded to someone else and it does not go offshore.
  • Quick turnaround. Repairs are a core part of what we do, not something squeezed in between installs, so equipment moves through rather than sitting.
  • Nationwide. We support companies the length of the country. Courier it in from anywhere and it comes back the same way.
  • Most brands. We service equipment regardless of who sold it to you.
  • Board-level capability. Component and board-level work, not just swapping the obvious parts and hoping.
  • Honest assessment. When a repair is not economic we tell you, rather than quoting it anyway.
  • Fleets, not just single units. Send in a batch and we will work through it.

Brands we service

Whoever sold it to you

We service most brands of communications equipment. These are the ones we see most often and know best — but the list is not a limit. If your radios are not here, ask.

Exclusive NZ distributor KirisunKirisun

Our main brand. Parts, firmware and factory support direct from the manufacturer.

Long-standing IcomIcom

Japanese-built handhelds, mobiles and base equipment. A brand we both supply and service.

Serviced Hytera

DMR handhelds, mobiles and repeaters, whether or not we supplied them.

Serviced Motorola

Commonly the incumbent fleet on a site we take over. We service it as it stands.

Serviced Tait

New Zealand built and widely deployed here. Handhelds, mobiles and infrastructure.

And the rest Most others

Send us the make and model and we will tell you straight away whether we can take it on.

What comes in

Handhelds through to infrastructure

If it is part of a radio system, it can come to the bench.

Handheld radio

Handheld radios

PTT switches, speakers and microphones, antenna connectors, water ingress, cases and keypads.

In-vehicle mobile radio

Mobile and in-vehicle sets

Power faults, RF output, control heads and looms, plus fault-finding on the install itself.

Rack-mount repeater

Repeaters and base stations

Bench testing, alignment and repair, either brought in or pulled from site by our field team.

Antenna

Antennas and feeders

Testing and replacement where a coverage problem turns out to be an antenna problem.

Radio battery

Batteries and chargers

Capacity testing and replacement — often the actual cause of a radio that "will not hold a charge".

Radio earpiece

Accessories

Speaker mics, earpieces, headsets and leads, which fail far more often than the radios do.

Band-pass filter

Filters and duplexers

Repair and tuning. A duplexer drifting off frequency degrades a site quietly, so it gets tuned on the bench and measured before it goes back.

Power supply unit

Power supply units

The part that takes a site down without ever being suspected. Tested under load, repaired or replaced.

Headset

Other

Headsets, hearing protection, control equipment and anything else that is part of the system. If it is not on this list, ask — the answer is usually yes.

How it works

Getting equipment to the bench

Four steps, whether it is one handheld or a fleet of thirty.

Tell us what is wrong

Make, model and what it is doing. Call us or send it through — a rough description is enough to start.

Send it in

Courier it to us from anywhere in New Zealand, or hand it over on a site visit if our field team is already coming to you.

Assessed and quoted

A technician finds the actual fault and you get a quote before any work happens. If it is not worth repairing, you hear that instead.

Repaired and returned

Fixed, tested and sent back working. Fleets come back together so you are not reassembling a set over several weeks.

Common questions

Before you send it

Do you repair radios you did not sell?

Yes. Most brands, whoever supplied them. A good share of our repair work is for equipment that came from somewhere else entirely — often from a supplier who has since told the customer to buy new.

How long will it take?

Repairs are a core part of what this business does rather than something fitted in around installations, so equipment moves through the workshop rather than sitting in a queue. We will give you a realistic timeframe when we assess it, and if a fault turns out to be something we cannot get parts for quickly we will tell you rather than leave it sitting.

I am not in Christchurch or Auckland. Can you still help?

Yes. We support companies nationwide and a lot of repair work arrives by courier. Send it in from anywhere in the country and it comes back the same way.

Can you repair a whole fleet at once?

Yes, and it is often the sensible way to do it. If radios across a fleet are all reaching the same age, sending them in as a batch gets them assessed and returned together rather than trickling back one at a time.

What if it is not worth repairing?

We tell you. There is a point where a radio has had its life and the economics stop working, and you are better off knowing that than paying for a repair that buys you six months. We would rather give you that answer than the one that sells more equipment.

Is the problem definitely the radio?

Not always — and this is worth saying. Plenty of "faulty radio" reports turn out to be a tired battery, a broken accessory, an antenna problem or a coverage gap. We work that out as part of the assessment rather than repairing something that was never broken.
